The origin of the margarita is a bit hazy due to three people claiming they invented the iconic cocktail. The most widespread story is of Carlos “Danny” Herrerea calming he invented the margarita at his Tijuana-based restaurant, Rancho La Gloria, in 1938. Herrera constructed the classic cocktail for a picky customer, Majorie King, after she claimed that she was allergic to all other hard liquors, except for tequila. King wasn’t a fan of drinking tequila straight, so Herrera built around the shot, creating the margarita. The next top candidate for the inventor of the famed cocktail is Margarita Sames, a wealthy Dallas socialite. Sames claimed she created the margarita in1948 at her vacation home in Acapulco for a group of friends. Tommy Hilton (Yes! One of those Hiltons) was in attendance and ended up adding the drink to his bar menu at his hotel chain. Lastly, Anthony Dias Blue, the first importer of Jose Cuervo in the United States advertised with the tagline, “Margarita: it’s more than a girl’s name,” in 1945, three years before Sames made her claim. So the true inventor of the margarita will always remain a mystery, but the drink sure is delicious and made in a variety of different ways. Here are a few margarita recipes!
